Tactical Scope Buying Guide

Whether you’re a seasoned shooter or a novice, having the right tactical scope makes a significant difference in your shooting experience. A good tactical scope can make it easier to hit targets, be more accurate, and more efficient. There are numerous factors to consider when purchasing a tactical scope, including magnification power, reticle type, and durability, among others. In this article, we’ll discuss everything you need to know when buying a tactical scope.

Magnification Power

The magnification power you choose for your tactical scope will depend on the type of shooting you plan on doing. If you’re a beginner, you may want to start with a lower magnification range of 1-4x power. As you become more experienced, you can move up to a 6-12x power range. Professional shooters may want to invest in scopes with a magnification range of up to 20x.

It’s important to note that the higher the magnification power, the narrower your field of view will be. This means you’ll need to be more precise in your movements and adjustments for accurate shooting. If you’re shooting at a target that is closer to you, you may not need as high a magnification power. Conversely, if you’re shooting at a target that is farther away, you’ll need a higher magnification power.

Reticle Type

The reticle type you choose will largely depend on the type of shooting you plan on doing. There are different types of reticles, including crosshairs, duplex, mil-dot, and BDC (Bullet Drop Compensator), among others. Each reticle type has its advantages and disadvantages.

For example, crosshairs are one of the most common reticles and are easy to use. However, they’re not as precise as other reticle types. Duplex reticles are similar to crosshairs but are more precise due to their thicker outer lines. If you’re looking for a reticle that provides a lot of information, the mil-dot reticle is the way to go. It’s designed to help you calculate the distance to your target and adjust for bullet drop. Lastly, BDC reticles are designed to provide a quick and easy way to compensate for bullet drop at different ranges.

Objective Lens Size

The objective lens size, measured in millimeters (mm), is the lens at the end of the scope that is closest to the target. The larger the objective lens size, the more light it lets in, providing a brighter and clearer image. This makes it easier to shoot in low light conditions.

However, a larger objective lens size also means a heavier and bulkier scope. It can also be more expensive. Another factor to keep in mind is that a larger objective lens size requires a higher mounting position, which can make it more difficult to achieve proper eye relief.

Tube Size

Tactical scopes come in two tube sizes: 1 inch and 30mm. The tube size you choose will largely depend on your personal preference and the type of shooting you plan on doing. The 30mm tube size is becoming more popular among professional shooters due to its larger internal diameter, which allows for more light transmission and better image clarity.

Eye Relief

Eye relief is the distance between your eye and the ocular lens at which you can see the full image. This is an important factor, especially if you’re using a rifle with significant recoil. If the scope doesn't have adequate eye relief, the recoil of the rifle could cause injury or discomfort.

Most tactical scopes have an eye relief of between 3-4 inches. It’s important to make sure you choose a scope with adequate eye relief, especially if you plan on shooting with a larger caliber rifle.

Tactical Turrets

The tactical turrets on a scope allow you to make quick and precise adjustments to your scope without having to take your eyes off the target. The two types of turrets are capped and uncapped. Capped turrets are set and locked in place, which means you can’t accidentally make adjustments. Uncapped turrets, on the other hand, are exposed and can be adjusted quickly and easily without removing the caps.

In addition to being capped or uncapped, turrets also have different click values. This is the degree of adjustment the turret will make when you turn it. The most common click values are 1/4 MOA (Minute of Angle) or 1/10 MIL (Milliradian). It’s important to choose a scope with turrets that have a click value that aligns with the reticle you want to use.

Durability

Lastly, you’ll want to choose a tactical scope that is durable and can withstand tough conditions. A durable scope will be able to handle the recoil of a high caliber rifle, as well as any environmental factors such as rain, snow, or dust.

When looking for a durable scope, consider the construction materials. Most high-quality scopes are made of aircraft-grade aluminum, which provides superior strength and durability. Additionally, you’ll want to make sure the scope is waterproof and fog-proof, which can help prevent moisture from damaging the internal components of the scope.

Final Thoughts

Choosing a tactical scope can be overwhelming, but if you keep these factors in mind, you’ll be able to find the right one for your needs. Remember to consider the magnification power, reticle type, objective lens size, tube size, eye relief, tactical turrets, and durability. With the right tactical scope, you’ll be able to take your shooting to the next level.
